In their paper “What drives the growth of start-up firms? A tool for mapping the state-of-the-art of the empirical literature” published in the European Journal of Innovation Management the authors Roberto PuglieseGuido BortoluzziMarco Balzano present an empirical analysis of over 300 scientific studies.

Their conclusions? Startups should focus on the following key areas:

  1. Carefully build a founding team comprised of people with different backgrounds and ideally previous entrepreneurial and managerial experience.
  2. Consider joining a corporate entrepreneurship program by a large incumbent.
  3. Do not be obsessed by the business model, despite anecdotal evidence and commercial literature emphasizing its importance.
  4. Focus on capabilities development, ideally from a location that enables skills development and access to a large network, such as scientific and technology parks, incubators and accelerators.
