In this video, Steven J. Skerlos (Associate Professor at the University of Michigan College of Engineering) shares his view on sustainability and the important factor of collective action. In a changing world like ours, values are also changing constantly. From an economic point of view, markets should be solving this issue. But as markets are just a reflection of human values, it may be time to shift these values in order to promote sustainability. As Skerlos explains, costs and benefits as well as individual vs group action are the major factors when it comes to shared ressources such as water or air. Regenerative energy and biofuels are two popular examples of disruptive technologies. But beware: Not everything that’s labelled green, turns out be actually green in the end.
